Previously only available via Mystery Gift distribution, Rockruff with its Hidden Ability Own Tempo returns to Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor.
Game Freak has thrown a bone to fans of the adorable Rock-type Puppy Pokémon Rockruff in its first DLC pack, The Isle of Armor. That’s right, players who missed out on a special in-game distribution event from a few years back can now, rather easily, obtain a Rockruff with its rare Own Tempo Hidden Ability. But before going any further, it’s important to dig up some of the details surrounding this one-of-a-kind canine.
Own Tempo Rockruff was initially distributed as a Mystery Gift via Nintendo Network in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon from November 17, 2017 to January 10, 2018. The front of its Wonder Card reads, “A special Rockruff! Thank you for playing Pokémon! Please pick up your gift from the deliveryman in any Pokémon Center.” The back of the Wonder Card says, “This Rockruff will evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc when leveled up to Lv. 25 or higher between the in-game times of 5:00 PM and 5:59 PM.”
A Little Bit About Own Tempo Rockruff
There are quite a few reasons why Own Tempo Rockruff is a special treat for Pokémon players. First, it’s a super cute ‘Mon; who wouldn’t want this blue-eyed friend prancing around while following them? OK, the more likely reason is because it can evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc in Pokémon Sword and Shield from 7-8 PM at Lv. 25 and above. Worth noting, this is a different time frame from its evolution requirement in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, as detailed on its Wonder Card above.
Dusk Form Lycanroc is unique in that it’s Ash’s Lycanroc from episode 37 of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon. In that episode, Rotom wasn’t able to identify it once it evolved from Rockruff. Nor was Professor Kukui. “Since Lycanroc evolved at sunset, we should probably call it a ‘Dusk Form’ Lycanroc,” Professor Kukui concluded. You can watch that episode right here.
How to Catch Own Tempo Rockruff
On The Isle of Armor, players have a 15 percent chance of encountering Own Tempo Rockruff during a Max Raid Battle; however, only one Pokémon Den offers the special pup. Make your way to Challenge Road and take your first right. Then continue along the path until you get to the top. There you’ll find the Pokémon Den in question.
We’ve prepared a video (below) that shows the exact location of the Pokémon Den where you have a chance of catching your own Own Tempo Rockruff. In addition to catching this special Pokémon, you’ll also be rewarded with some decent loot—Armorite Ore, Exp. Candies, Stardust, and more. Own Tempo prevents Rockruff from becoming confused during battle, which can be very beneficial. But you’ll probably want to eventually evolve it into the bigger and stronger Dusk Form Lycanroc.
Once you have an Own Tempo Rockruff, you can breed it with a Ditto to produce as many of these special puppies as you want. Some players who haven’t purchased The Isle of Armor DLC are still looking for someone to trade it to them. (If any of our readers need one, we will be happy to trade with you—feel free to reach out to us on Twitter.)
Some In-game Tidbits About Dusk Form Lycanroc
Its Pokémon Sword description reads, “This form of Lycanroc is normally calm and quiet. Once a battle begins, however, this Pokémon displays a ferocious fighting spirit.” And its Pokémon Shield description reads, “These Pokémon have both calm and ferocious qualities. Their temperamental nature makes them a difficult species to raise.” And did you know that Lycanroc and its pre-evolved form are the only Rock-type Pokémon that cannot learn Sandstorm?
